The Columbine WFM is located in Region 2, San Juan National Forest/Columbine Ranger District in the town of Bayfield, CO. We are situated in the Southwest portion of Colorado near the “4 corners”. The San Juan NF also encompasses the Weminuche Wilderness Area (488,210 acres) which provides a great opportunity for managed fire. The Columbine WFM consists of 10 personal: 1-GS-8/7 PFT Captain, 1-GS-6 PSE Assistant/Squad Leader and 8 seasonal crewmember positions ranging from the GS-5 level to the GS-3 level. The Module’s first year was the 2013 fire season as the crew became a WFM Type 2. The crew has been an “Initial Attack” Module dating back to the early 2000’s where the crew ranged in size from 6-15 personal. The crew often responds to initial attack fires both on forest and neighboring agencies in many complex Wildland Urban Interface areas that include Durango, CO. The crew is the only WFM on forest and often gets assignments for multiple objective fires in the Weminuche Wilderness Area and becomes available nationally usually once the “Monsoon” season arrives. The module participates in an active prescribed fire program both on district and forest through implementation, prep work and monitoring. The module often works with many other fire programs on the forest in support of training and detail assignments with San Juan IHC, Durango Helitack and Engine Crews. The module also supports detailers from other ranger districts throughout the summer.
